The 22 "probable" cases and one "suspected" case are linked to cinnamon applesauce pouches that have been recalled by the Food and Drug Administration, DOH said.

The affected products were:

  • WanaBana apple cinnamon fruit puree pouches – including three packs
  • Schnucks-brand cinnamon-flavored applesauce pouches and variety pack
  • Weis-brand cinnamon applesauce pouches

FDA officials said Thursday, Feb. 29 that the lead and chromium previously detected in the cinnamon were from lead chromate and that anyone who ate the recalled products should tell their doctor.

Anyone who still has the recalled products should throw them away or return them.

According to the DOH, the probable and suspected cases of lead poisoning in Pennsylvania were reported from:

  • Allegheny County
  • Cumberland County
  • Chester County
  • Delaware County
  • Erie County
  • Mercer County
  • Monroe County
  • Lancaster County
  • Montgomery County
  • Northumberland County
  • Philadelphia

Nationwide, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said 468 cases have been reported across 44 states. Their investigation is ongoing.
